Icy Glaze
I captured this nature portrait on January 2nd, 2021. On this day, I looked out one of my windows, saw the ice melting off of this branch, and decided to photograph it. I had to use a telephoto lens to get it this close. It was very overcast at this time, so I decided to photograph it in monochromatic (black-and-white) format with cyanotype split-toning. I chose this because the color blue reflected the cold weather the area was experiencing for the last few days (it was getting warmer this day). I was drawn to the bright, glossy sheen of the now-melting ice and the way it enveloped the ends of the branch, as well as the way it was starting to drip and miniature icicles. I increased the brightness and split-toning saturation to the highlights to give the ice a glow-like appearance.
